Patrick had the pleasure of playing varsity football for the first year and then played the next three years with the varsity soccer team.
Many wonderful friendships were formed during his four years at Saint Mary's. The accounting program opened many doors, first of which was to article for a C.A. (CPA) with Peat Marwick (KPMG) in Halifax upon graduation. Upon completion of his time with KPMG, he moved to a National Courier company as controller, then Atlantic District Manager and ultimately National Operations Manager before leaving the transportation industry to settle in as a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones.
His wife Doris (Volk), BA and BED concurrently with Teaching Certificate, '83 (York University) came to Canada as a young lady of seven (born in Australia) with her parents (Slovenia) and only brother. Doris taught passionately for 22 years before working with her husband in his practice. They both value "the ability to access higher learning" and they simply wanted to pay it forward to assist the "young minds" to further themselves and become productive member of society. In the end, their hope is that some of these students will also be in a position to "pay it forward" for others.

Margaret M and James E Britten Memorial Bursary
Jim and Margaret (nee Kiely) Britten were born and raised in Halifax. As was common, their formal educations were sacrificed in lieu of earning a wage to contribute to the welfare of their respective families. Both Margaret and Jim had active social lives and, as luck would have it, they met, fell in love and eventually married in 1939. In those early years, Jim worked for the Post Office as a Railway Mail Clerk while Margaret devoted herself to raising a family.
Understanding the value of an education, the post war years brought a commitment from both Jim and Margaret, that would see Jim attempt to enhance his formal education while working full time and supporting a family. With the assistance of his brother John, a fellow Railway Mail Clerk, and the support and understanding of Margaret, Jim graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from St Mary’s. During his “St Mary’s” years he balanced his academics and family life with such distractions as producing and performing in several theatrical efforts such as the 1954 production of Stalag 17 put on by the “Play Shop” back in 1954.
Graduation was followed by employment opportunities within the Federal Civil Service which meant a move to Ottawa. For the next ten years, in the midst of raising three sons and with Margaret working full time outside the home, Jim managed to acquire two additional university degrees. A Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Ottawa and a Master of Arts (Public Administration) from Carleton University translated into promotions and a transfer to the Department of Health and Welfare.
The Margaret M. Britten and James E. Britten Bursary Endowment has been established in lasting recognition of their sacrifices and to assist others in taking full advantage of the opportunities and enrichment that can result from a university education.

Should you close yourself off from new experiences and opportunities (which. as he hastened to add, is perfectly legitimate), or should you continue to create and engage with the world? Rowland created this prize in the spirit of the latter course.
